Cat Care Nutrition Guide

Taking care of your cat goes far beyond nutrition. And the more you learn, the better it is for your cat.

Bringing a Cat Home

Be patient. Some cats are outgoing, some more timid. Let your new cat adapt to your household at his own pace.

Get down to his level. Sit on the floor and use cat toys to grab your cat's interest. Allow him to come up and greet you.

Offer a safe place. When your cat appears relaxed and confident in his room, open the door and let him investigate, but keep his safe place to retreat to.

The more the merrier. Just make sure to follow these tips.

More than one?

Two is a crowd, at first. Allow a period of adjustment for everyone. It may take as long as a year for your cats to develop a friendship or they may just learn to co-exist. Be patient, it will happen.

Create separate quarters. First, let your cats sniff and play "footsie" under the door. Expect posturing and hissing, but they'll get used to each other's scent soon. When they're ready, supervise their visits. And give them each their space when they want to be alone.

Lots of litter. Provide at least one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Keep litter boxes, food and water in the open, so your cats won't feel trapped.

Health and Safety

Keep him well by protecting, nurturing and understanding him.

Indoor or Outdoor? Decide where your cat will roam, and stick to it.

Make sure you keep your new cat up-to-date on vaccinations.

Watch for indications that your cat might be sick.

Look out for fleas and parasites.

Before getting mad about things like scratching, learn the "whys" and "hows" of common behavior.

I never get tired of talking about this. Or for that matter, of talking at all.

Nutrition

Dry or wet? Cats will nibble on a bowl of dry food throughout the day or they may eat an entire serving of wet food in one sitting. Both dry and canned varieties of 9Lives® cat food can satisfy the cravings and feeding habits of your cat.

Go for quality. Standards of quality and cat nutrition established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) ensure that AAFCO-compliant cat food provides complete and balanced cat nutrition. All 9Lives® varieties, both canned and dry, meet AAFCO standards.

Read the label. Your cat's food should provide a complete and balanced supply of nutrients. For example, new 9Lives Daily Essentials® cat food offers Omega 3 fatty acids, protein and iron. And feed your cat according to the directions on the package, usually based on age and/or weight.

And isn't that really what it's all about?

Meal Time

Comfort zone. Promote healthy eating by giving your cat a quiet, clean place to eat.

Don't overfeed. Obesity can increase the risk of heart and liver disease, respiratory problems, orthopedic issues and diabetes.

The milk myth. They do like the taste, but most adult cats have lost the ability to digest milk. Avoid giving it to your cat.

Proper pets. Make sure your cat isn't eating Fido's food. Dog food is developed for dogs' nutritional needs, and your cat has his own unique requirements for protein, taurine, niacin, vitamin A and fatty acids.

Skip the scraps. Resist feeding human food to your cat — it can upset his digestive system and make him sick.

Go easy on the treats. Though healthy cat treats are okay from time to time, use them sparingly as a reward for good behavior or a training tool
